    Stop dreaming.  Stop designing.  Take your “first foot forward” initiative to start a career in a retail association with your local merchant.  Do you have or can you perform the following?

    Data Processing Materials & Services

    Draperies, Curtains and Upholstery

    Electrical Equipment and Supplies

    Floor and Wall Coverings

    Housekeeping and Janitorial Supplies

    Office Supplies

    Contract Cleaning

    Facilities Management

    Contract Painting

     Trash Removal and Recycling Supplier, or service opportunities can be found. Furniture opportunities they say are very limited.

    Think first. The Corporate Purchasing Department is located in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Do not walk into your local store and try to submit your contract solicitation.  Find the appropriate address for mailing your proposal. Look for

    RETAIL VENDORS (BRANDED MERCHANDISE)  Which department is best for your product?

    Women’s: Moderate Sportswear, Outerwear, Active, Swim, Junior’s, Accessories, Sleep Wear, Day Wear, Intimate, Casual, Career and Dresses.

    Men’s Neckwear, Knit & Woven Sportswear, Young Men’s Outerwear, Furnishings, Contemporary, Accessories and Suits.

    Children’s and Accessories: All areas.

    Cosmetics: Fragrance, Bath & Body, Color & Treatment lines.

    Home: Decorative, Textiles, Small Electrics Housewares.

    According to their guidelines, as a potential vendor, you should be prepared to discuss the following.

    FOR PRODUCT VENDORS

    Targeted Customer:   Discuss age, average income, median family size, geographic location, population size and
                                          expected growth.

    Product Demand:      Where do you see your product coming from in the future?

    Benefits for Macy’s:   

                                        How will your product help position Macy’s to take advantage of future demand?

                                         How can Macy’s gain market share with your product? control costs and/or maximize sales?

                                        What is the added value your product has over your competition?

                                        Does your packaging enhance the image and appearance of the product, compared to their current products?

                                       How will your product positively impact related products in Macy’s stores?

                                      Competition: What/Who are your direct and indirect competition in the market?

    FOR SERVICE VENDORS

    Cost Savings:             How your service will save Macy’s, Inc. money.

    Efficiency:                  How your service will increase speed, accuracy and /or quality to Macy’s operations.

    Growth:                    Where you see it coming from in the future and ways growth in your service will help Macy’s.

    Benefits for Macy’s: 

                                      How can Macy’s gain market share with your service? control costs and/or maximize sales? 
                                      What are the advantages and benefits of using your service rather than a competitor’s similar service?

                                     Competition:  Who/What are your direct and indirect competition in the market?

                                     Related Services:  In what way does your service impact other related services or products in the stores?

    FOR VENDORS OF NON-RETAIL

    Products Savings:  How will your non-retail products reduce costs for Macy’s?

    Efficiency:  How will your service increase speed, accuracy and /or quality to Macy’s operations?

    Benefits for Macy’s:

                             How can Macy’s gain market share with your service or control costs and/or maximize sales?

                             What are the advantages and benefits of using your service rather than a competitor’s similar service?

                            Competition:  Who are our direct and indirect competition in the market?

                            Related Services: Will your non-retail product impact other related services or products Macy’s buys? How?

    These questions can be used by authors, artists, musicians, and publishers to submit your proposal for sales.
